M Night Shyamalan is not a name one associates much with box office pyrotechnics these days, yet in the wake of the hit Split two years ago, the follow-up Glass is expected to sparkle this weekend.

The finale of Shyamalan’s so-called Eastrail 177 Trilogy that began with Unbreakable back in late 2000 launches day-and-date with Universal’s North American Martin Luther King Jr. holiday debut in most major markets this weekend via Buena Vista International.

Los Angeles On-Location Feature Filming Surges 12.2% in 2018

On-location feature filming in Greater Los Angeles expanded impressively in 2018, gaining 12.2% to 4,377 shooting days, according to FilmL.A.

Production activity for feature films rose 15.5% to 1,078 shooting days during the fourth quarter, with 146 days coming from projects receiving California tax credits — including Netflix’s “Bird Box,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio; and McG’s sci-fi invasion tale “Rim of the World.”

Total on-location production in Los Angeles gained 1.3% for 2018 to 38,795 shooting days, despite a 4.9% decline in television shooting to 14,466 days. The key TV drama category rose 10.6% to 4,848 days in 2018 while comedies slid 16% to 1,810 days and reality declined 9.2% to 3,980 days. Commercial shooting for 2018 increased 8.7% to 6,033 days.

Incentivized TV drama projects accounted for 282 of the 1,489 shooting days recorded in that category for the fourth quarter, including “Euphoria,” “Good Girls,” “Legion,” and “Lucifer.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Being Rebooted Again, Production Begins This Year

It’s only been two and a bit years since the heroes in a half-shell were last on the big screen, but Paramount Pictures has announced it’s already working on a new reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller’s Platinum Dunes production company returning to helm the next mutation of the franchise.

While speaking to Variety at Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards, Form spilled the beans, revealing that the film goes before the cameras at the end of 2019.

“We’re doing a reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at Paramount. That is looking like production at the end of the year,” he said.

“Did you just give something away?” Fuller added. “Oh boy. We did the preceding two Turtle movies, but I didn’t know that we were saying that we’re making it, but that’s good to know!

Viacom Explores Sale of Majority Stake in Its China Channels

Viacom is exploring the sale of its majority stake in its TV channels in China, according to media reports Monday.

The media giant has held talks with at least one entity in China over the sale of stakes in channels such as MTV and Nickelodeon, the Wall Street Journal said. The newspaper, which was the first to report the move, did not name the potential buyer.

News of the talks comes as the U.S. and China become increasingly entrenched in the trade war that has soured relations between the nations over the past several months. Although a reduction in Viacom’s stakes would remove its control over its channels in China, bringing on a Chinese majority owner could help with navigating the country’s tricky political and regulatory environment.

Viacom sources told Variety that the company, under CEO Bob Bakish, remains committed to the Chinese market, whose mammoth size makes it impossible to ignore.

Viacom in Talks to Sell Majority Stake in Chinese TV Networks

Viacom is in talks to sell a majority stake in its Chinese TV networks, including MTV and Nickelodeon, according to an individual familiar with the company’s plans.

The company, led by CEO Bob Bakish, has had discussions with at least one Chinese company, the individual said, adding that any deal would be structured similarly to the joint venture forged last year with Reliance Industries in India.

Last January, Reliance paid $20 million to increase stake in Viacom’s Reliance18 from 50 to 51 percent, taking over operational control of the venture. The company has a comparable arrangement in South Korea, where Sbs holds majority interest in a joint venture overseeing the local versions of MTV and Nickelodeon.

A rep for Viacom declined to comment on the new talks.

China Box Office: ‘Bumblebee’ Leads, but Trails Previous ‘Transformers’ Films

Paramount’s “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” far outstripped local competitors at China’s weekend box office to bring in $25.8 million, according to figures from consulting firm Artisan Gateway. Yet despite strong praise from audiences about the film’s more character-focused storytelling and the cuteness of its eponymous Autobot, the new origin story has still underperformed compared to the previous franchise titles directed by Michael Bay.

Imax screenings accounted for $2.5 million of “Bumblebee’s” three-day haul, bumping the film’s total Imax revenue in China up to $10 million. As of Sunday night, the Hailee Steinfeld-starring tale has grossed a cumulative $107 million in China after 10 days in theaters.

‘Aquaman’ Splashes Past $1B Worldwide; Now #2 DC Movie Ever – International Box Office

Update, writethru Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman joined the billion-dollar club worldwide this session, now counting $732.4M at the international box office and $1.02B global. The milestone makes the James Wan-directed origins story the 5th movie released in 2018 to get across $1B, behind Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2. It is also WB’s 2nd highest-grossing movie ever overseas and the 5th title in WB history to reach $1B.

The Jason Momoa-starrer has been riding a huge wave offshore since it first traveled to China in early December and now joins The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises as the only DC pics to the billion-dollar threshold. Paramount’s “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” led the international box office again, generating $35.6 million in 64 markets.

The autobot origin story, starring Hailee Steinfeld, has now earned $256.3 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $364 million. While ticket sales are way below even the worst reviewed installments in the sci-fi franchise (“Transformers: The Last Knight” ended its theatrical run with $605 million in 2017), this entry has proven to have long legs at the box office. Moreover, the studio paid less than half of what it cost the previous Michael Bay-directed “Transformers” movies to make.

Bumblebee” opened in the Philippines this weekend with $2.2 million. Among holdovers, China saw the best returns with $24.8 million from 7,232 locations, followed by the United Kingdom with $1.3 million in 557 sites. It releases in its final territory, Japan, on March 22.

The “Transformers” franchise appeared to be on a downturn after 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Knight” dramatically underperformed at the box office. Enter “Bumblebee,” which currently holds a 95 percent fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, easily the best mark of the series.

Travis Knight’s prequel, set in 1987, cost less than any of its predecessors and looks to revitalize the “Transformers” brand this holiday season. It also sort of resets the stage a little bit by doing away with the endless retcons of the Michael Bay sequels. This is not a franchise that has anything resembling airtight continuity, but “Bumblebee” nonetheless is still a part of that continuity, and is geared to get the franchise back on its feet.

Given that “Bumblebee” is the sixth movie in the series and Paramount surely would hope to keep this train rolling, you can’t help but wonder

Bumblebee movie “solidly profitable”, but Transformers: The Last Knight lost $100 million

It may have received the best reviews of the franchise to date (by some distance) and injected new life into the series post-Michael Bay, but Paramount Pictures and Hasbro’s Transformers spinofff Bumblebee hasn’t quite managed to take the box office by storm.

Going into the weekend, Bumblebee has earned $311 million worldwide – a far cry from the billion dollar heights of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction, and a little over half that of 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, a movie that derailed the series and paved the way for a post-Michael Bay overhaul.

However, Bumblebee also cost a lot less than Bay’s Transformers movies, with a reported budget of $135 million before prints and advertising, which has led Bob Bakish, CEO of Paramount’s parent company Viacom, to state that the Travis Knight-directed spinoff is “solidly profitable” for the studio.

The writing duo of Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are currently in talks to pen the screenplay for the long-gestating new adaptation of the popular toy line for the big screen. Sony Pictures is working on the movie, as they have been for some time, alongside the recently formed Mattel Films, the new movie division of the popular toy company.

According to a new report, should Matt Holloway and Art Marcum close their deal, they'll be the latest to take a stab at Masters of the Universe. David S. Goyer penned the previous draft. It isn't clear at the present time if Holloway and Marcum will be doing a rewrite, or if they are going to be starting over from scratch. However, the report does note that Goyer will remain on board as a producer.

Warner Bros.’ tentpole “Aquaman” is expected to win its fourth consecutive weekend easily over the newcomers by earning another $15 million to $20 million. The Jason Momoa starrer has dominated at multiplexes and is nearing $1 billion in worldwide grosses, topping $270 million domestically and $700 million internationally.

Russian Second World War tank movie T-34 has become the most successful local film of all time to open at the Russian box office.

The film, released by Central Partnership, grossed $10.6m (713m roubles) over the four-day weekend from from January 3-6, a sizeable increase on the previous record set by Oleg Stepchenko’s fantasy film, Viy which grossed $9m ( 602m roubles) on its opening weekend in 2014.
