Zachary Levi’s ‘Shazam!’ Is ‘Pure Superhero Entertainment’ and 6 Other Electrifying Reviews
Reviews are in for Zachary Levi’s “Shazam!” and most critics agree — it’s a “slick” and “entertaining” superhero film, and “DC’s most joyful and sweet movie since the days of Christopher Reeve’s ‘Superman.'”

The DC film starring Zachary Levi in the title role of an adult superhero with the spirit of a 14-year-old won’t be hitting theaters until April 5, but it’s already showing signs of blockbuster potential, thanks to word of mouth from impressed critics.

While one critic called “Shazam!” the “slickest DC movie in years,” TheWrap’s own film critic Alonso Duralde says, “This new DC entry has a lovely lightness, both in the visuals and in its tone.” Overall, the film currently holds a score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Shazam!’ Review: DC Surprises with One of the Most Fun Superhero Movies Ever Made

‘Shazam!’ Review: DC Surprises with One of the Most Fun Superhero Movies Ever Made
From “Watchmen” to “The Incredibles” and most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been any number of movies set in a world where the general public knows about the existence of superheroes. The common folk in these films refer to such enhanced (and sartorially flamboyant) individuals as “mutants” or “paranormals” or “Avengers,” but the terminology doesn’t really matter because the basic dynamic is always the same: Regardless of whether they’re thought to be threats, saviors, or something in between, anyone in spandex is fundamentally separate from general society.

Of course, it’s never an even split, because power is an inherently unequal thing. Those who have it look down at the faceless masses they hope to help, rule, or exploit; those who don’t look up and feel as small as they might seem from above. Probably. It’s hard to say. We seldom get to see these stories from their perspective.

Sony’s Reportedly Planning A Spider-Ham TV Show

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the best superhero film in a very long time, shaking up the increasingly repetitive superhero origin story with a barrage of psychedelic imagery, snappy dialogue and real heart. It’s gone on to be a box office success and an award winner, too, recently picking up a richly deserved Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Of course, with success like this comes opportunity, with Sony eager to capitalize on the film via several spinoffs. We’ve already heard confirmation of a sequel to the movie, as well as rumors about Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man Noir films, but now we’re hearing from a trusted source that there’s going to be a fully fledged John Mulaney-voiced Spider-Ham TV show, too.

A clue as to what this might look like comes on the Spider-Verse home video release, which features the Spider-Ham mini-movie Caught in a Ham. The short

This Vampire Weekend Cover of Post Malone's "Sunflower" Sounds Like a Totally Different Song

Vampire Weekend may have recently released a single called "Sunflower," but the preppy rock band went ahead and covered Post Malone's "Sunflower," too, for good measure. During a recent appearance on BBC Radio 1, Vampire Weekend offered a jazzy spin on the song Post Malone and Swae Lee originally collaborated on for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Though I have a special place in my heart for the youthful original, Vampire Weekend's cover - with its smooth guitar and soulful backup vocals - is certainly a more mature iteration. Check it out above, and feel free to jam out to the original ahead.

Watch Vampire Weekend Cover Post Malone’s ‘Sunflower’
Although Vampire Weekend recently released a new single called “Sunflower,” the New York group elected to perform a cover of Post Malone’s track of the same name during their BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session. This low-key version transforms Post Malone’s pop-ready number into a vibe-y indie rock tune, stripping back the synth beats in favor of sparse piano chords.

Post Malone’s single, which appeared on the soundtrack for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, featured Swae Lee and was penned specifically for the animated Marvel film. The song topped

Marvel Studios Founder Heartbroken That Black Panther Didn’t Win Best Picture

Black Panther made history earlier this year by being the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Though Ryan Coogler’s film about the King of Wakanda came away with three gongs – Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Production Design – it didn’t manage to break down the door and pick up the most coveted award of the night.

Someone who’s “heartbroken” over Bl‘s Oscar loss is former Marvel boss Avi Arad. Before Kevin Feige took over the company, Arad was the founder of Marvel Studios, though he left back in 2006 prior to the advent of the McU. Though he’s long cut ties with Marvel, Arad’s clearly still a fan of their films and talked to Deadline about his frustration with how the Academy views superhero entertainment.

“I was heartbroken that Black Panther didn’t get the Academy.

Spider-Man Producer Invites Sam Raimi To Direct Another Spidey Movie

Sony’s Spider-Man franchise was in a rocky state for about, oh, 10 years there, but they finally hit something universally adored again with last December’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Oscar-winning animated movie that introduced audiences to the various Spider-people of the multiverse. Understandably, the plan is for this to spawn a franchise, with each spinoff film starring one of these alt-Spideys.

But could one of them be a cartoon take on Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man? That’s what we’re now thinking could happen as producer Avi Arad revealed to Deadline that he’d like to work with Sam Raimi again to see what kind of Spider-Verse movie he’d come up with.

“I would love to see what kind of animated Spider-Man movie we’d get from Sam Raimi so if he sees this, ‘Call me Sam!'”

Raimi helmed the original Spider-Man trilogy from 2002-2007, two

Sony Animation Picks Up ‘Hair Love’ Short From ‘BlacKkKlansman’ Ep Matthew A. Cherry
Exclusive: With directing gigs on Big 4 shows like Whiskey Cavalier and The Red Line, Matthew A. Cherry has a pretty full dance card this year, but the BlacKkKlansman executive producer is heading into some new territory also.

Animation, to be precise.

Coming off a record breaking Kickstarter campaign two years ago to raise funds for Hair Love, Cherry has now partnered with Sony Pictures Animation on the short film, I’ve learned.

“In the past year, it has been very clear that audiences have been yearning to see fresh stories that are universal and culturally authentic,” says Spa President Kristine Belson of the Cherry written and co-helmed pic focusing on an African-American dad being put in charge of doing his little girl’s hair for the first time. “Hair Love is a wonderful father-daughter story and we are proud to nurture talented young filmmakers like Matthew who are breaking new ground,

The 2019 Box Office Is Down Half a Billion Dollars: It’s Not All Bad News

The 2019 Box Office Is Down Half a Billion Dollars: It’s Not All Bad News
Twelve days into its domestic opening, “Captain Marvel” has earned over $270 million in North America — but that’s not enough to end recent worries about the plunging box office. Revenue is still off by more than 20 percent, suggesting an unusual confluence of factors have created a sudden pronounced lack of interest in moviegoing. Here’s four of them.

Fewer wide-release films

Through last weekend, 2019 has seen 21 films open on more than 1,500 screens. This time last year, that number was 27. Even if those were lesser-grossing titles, figure six fewer films contributed at least $150 million to the shortfall. That doesn’t mean individual films made less this year; indeed, the absence of competition may have meant higher grosses for them. However, this looks like the new normal as studios conserve their firepower to produce fewer, more-expensive titles.

Christmas was weak

To put it kindly, January is a month for more secondary titles.
