intriguing but failed exercise
5 May 2017 | by See all my reviews

Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) was abandoned as a baby by Karen (Gina Bellman) at a Lucas, Kansas farm. Twenty years later, she's a nurse at the local hospital. She gets swept up by a tornado in a cop car with a police dog. She is taken to a native village accused of killing the Witch of the East. She is banished out of the tribal lands setting her off on an adventure in the reimagined Oz. The Wizard (Vincent D'Onofrio) rules Emerald City suppressing magic of its witches like West (Ana Ularu) and Glinda of the North (Joely Richardson). He supposedly defeated The Beast Forever long ago with his Stone Giants. Eamonn is the head of his guard. Dorothy stumbles across a crucified amnesiac man she names Lucas (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). Jack (Gerran Howell) tries to free Tip (Jordan Loughran) who has been imprisoned and fed magical potion by Mombi. Dorothy caring for a sickly Lucas stumble upon Mombi's dwelling.

Directed by Tarsem Singh, this series has both of his hallmarks; fantastical visual style and muddled story telling. The only reason that this is even barely followable is that Oz is well-known. The audience is much like Dorothy, lost in this strange new world. It takes several episodes before the series find its footings. Adria Arjona is a beautiful girl but she lacks the bigger presence to start this monstrosity by herself. There is also the B story of Emerald City which only muddles along in confusion. It's a chore to follow and figure out. Eventually, the bits and pieces reach a critical mass sometime after the transformations of Jack and Tip. This is an intriguing but failed exercise.
