Despite many negative reviews, superhero movie Venom
is officially the number one movie in the world after taking a whopping $205 million in its opening weekend, an October record. In its domestic territory of North American, the Tom Hardy
-led superhero flick managed a superb $80 million, the best performance in October ever, and much more than the previous record holder, 2013’s Gravity
, which pulled in $55 million over its first three days. The movie, a spin-off from the Spider-Man
movies, though not in the current McU, cost around $100 million to bring to the screen.
In second place, fellow new opener A Star Is Born
, the directorial debut of actor Bradley Cooper
, picked up a cool $41.25 million, plus another $14 million from around the world. The film cost a reported $36 million to make, so is a hit, plus a future Oscar contender.
Rounding out the top three is animated fare Smallfoot, which opens in the UK this week.
