‘Myst’ Film and TV Rights Sell to Village Roadshow
Myst,” the influential video game that helped usher in the CD-rom era, may inspire an ambitious multi-platform film and television universe.

Village Roadshow Entertainment Group, the co-producer and co-financier of the “Matrix” and “Sherlock Holmes” franchises, has acquired the rights to the first-person graphic adventure. The graphics were considered to be state-of-the-art, and some fans had a quasi-religious attachment to its mythology.

“Myst” inspired several sequels and spinoffs over the decades, but its primary story follows Atrus, grandson of a woman who discovered the D’ni civilization in a cavern deep below the New Mexico desert. These mystical people create books that link to other worlds, but the discovery triggers a cultural clash

The rollout of “Holey Moley” has largely been a success for ABC, with the debut ranking as one of the most-watched new series premieres of the summer season. The network’s reboots of the classic gameshows “Press Your Luck” and “Card Sharks” have similarly performed well.

Are TV Mega Deals Worth It? Why Studios Are Paying So Much for Producing Talent

  • The Wrap
Netflix bidding farewell to “The Office,” with NBCUniversal announcing Tuesday it would pull the hit off the streaming service in two years, highlights why mega deals with top producers are redefining the landscape in the high-stakes streaming wars.

But will those deals pay off?

The days of Netflix building a streaming business on classic TV shows appear to be numbered, which is why it was a coup for the streaming giant to secure the services of Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy. Netflix is hoping that the two uber-producers behind hits like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “American Horror Story” will keep it perched atop the rapidly-expanding streaming kingdom.

WarnerMedia, meanwhile, is prepared to give J.J. Abrams $500 million to help prop up its upcoming streaming service, while last week it was announced that longtime producer John Wells will help Warner Bros. TV take advantage of all the new content buyers, to
