Disney Boasts a Bevy of Hopefuls for Oscar’s Original Song Race
When the Academy announces its shortlist for song nominations on Dec. 16, you can be certain that at least one Disney song will be on it and probably more.

Disney songs have been nominated 33 times in the past 30 years, winning 12 of the gold statuettes.

This year, the studio has at least four in the running: two from live-action remakes of animated classics and two from highly anticipated sequels. Three are already among the top-10 grossing films of the year, and the fourth, just released, is expected to join that elite crowd in a matter of weeks.

“Speechless,” from this year’s “Aladdin” remake, was written by original composer Alan Menken (who won a 1992 Oscar for that film’s “A Whole New World”) with new lyricist partners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Oscar winners for a song from “La La Land” three years ago). It’s sung by Naomi Scott as

‘Aladdin’ Spinoff With Billy Magnussen’s Character in the Works for Disney Plus
Disney is developing a spinoff of its live-action “Aladdin” with Billy Magnussen reprising his Prince Anders character.

The unnamed project is in early development for the studio’s recently launched Disney Plus streaming service. Disney has hired Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to write a script centered on the haughty Prince Anders, one of Princess Jasmine’s suitors.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, producers of “Aladdin,” are producing the spinoff through their Rideback company. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce.

Aladdin” became the 41st title to cross the $1 billion worldwide box office mark in July. It opened with $117 million over the Memorial Day holiday and easily outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic projections along with underlining the validity of the studio’s strategy of rebooting its animated classics such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Jungle Book.”

In this case, it remade the original 1992 animated movie with Mena Massoud as Aladdin,

The project was set to be co-produced with Pow! Entertainment, the American outfit run by Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee, who died last year at the age of 95.

Mr Kim said he is now in discussions with new partners about resurrecting the project, which was initially set to be written by I Am Number Four scribes Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, though didn’t disclose company names.

Mena Massoud And Billy Magnussen Spark Post-‘Aladdin’ Casting Controversy

No matter how you felt about Disney‘s live-action “Aladdin” remake, you probably walked away impressed by the film’s young stars. Mena Massoud has all the charisma you could want from everyone’s favorite lamp-stealing orphan, and Naomi Scott shines as Princess Jasmine. Even Billy Magnussen, a comedy regular in a small role, finds time to shine in the movie. Surely these actors would go on to do great things with their careers.

Adam Driver Is Not Here For Your Kylo Ren Redemption Talk

One of the most significant uncertainties for “Star Wars” fans this past year has been the fate of Kylo Ren. On the one hand, Ren has done terrible things, not least of which the murder of his father and the destruction of entire planets (order those however you see fit as a “Star Wars” fan). On the other hand, the franchise has always been about finding light in the darkness; even Ser Genocide Darth Vader got to have his Good Guy Force Ghost moment at the end of ‘Return of the Jedi.’

The prospects of a Kylo Ren redemption are even further muddied by this trilogy’s uneven relationship with the six movies that preceded it.

‘Rise of Skywalker’: J.J. Abrams Teases Palpatine, Leia & Debuts Extended Clip at Ccxp

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is just around the corner, but that doesn't mean the cast and creators are done teasing what's to come in the future of the Star Wars. With Ccxp underway in São Paulo, Brazil, director and co-writer J.J. Abrams took the stage with cast members Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega to discuss the making of the Skywalker Saga conclusion and offer a few tantalizing (but very very vague) quotes about what we can expect in the much-anticipated finale decades in the making. Of course, one of the …

J.J. Abrams Teases Whether the Force Will Find Balance in ‘Rise of Skywalker’

It was an interesting day for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac on Saturday because the Star Wars quartet made an appearance at Ccxp 2019. While it was fun to see the foursome presenting a clip from Rise of Skywalker, basking in the love from fans in the audience, and answering different questions about their time working on the movie, for a majority of their visit it felt like no new news related to hints about what to expect would be revealed. Awkwafina Is Poised for a Historic Oscar Nomination for ‘The Farewell’
Awkwafina is poised to become the first Asian-American woman ever nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award if the season plays out in her favor. The last time an Asian woman was nominated in this category was 1935, with Merle Oberon — who was born in what was then British India — for “The Dark Angel.” Awkwafina’s shattering performance in “The Farewell” presents a riff on director Lulu Wang’s own story as the daughter of a family laboring to keep their grandmother’s terminal cancer diagnosis a secret. IndieWire presents a moving, exclusive clip from the film below.

In regard to her minority status in Hollywood, Awkwafina told IndieWire over the summer, back when A24 released “The Farewell” to strong box office return for an indie, “I think that if I am cast in a production, already that means that production is kind of forward-thinking…Hiring me is always a risk,

Ryan Reynolds Snags “Peloton Wife” Monica Ruiz For New Viral Ad

Let’s be honest. This is about a commercial. All 300-whatever words of this article are meant to have you watch a new commercial for a gin company, tangentially related to film because the parent company is owned by actor Ryan Reynolds. But this is also one of the most incredible stories of social media self-inflicted wounds you’ll read this year, as well as an example of digital trend-jacking done well. We spend so much time as consumers of entertainment media just watching companies go through the motions – release a poster, release a teaser, yadda yadda yadda – that it is genuinely thrilling to see a company screw things up to that degree.

New ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Featurette Highlights Friendship Among the Cast

Disney is really aiming for your heartstrings with their Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker featurettes. The newest one highlights the friendship between Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac, but it’s also a worthwhile selling point for the movie since this will be the first time that Rey, Finn, and Poe are all on adventure together rather than being split up or paired off in different ways like we saw in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. What funny about this marketing campaign is that it’s wisely going after your emotions rather than …
